Preserving the Zapin Pecah Dua Belas Dance to strengthen local cultural identity in Riau, Indonesia

Abstract

This study explores how the city of Pekanbaru, Riau, preserves and strengthen its cultural identity through the Zapin Pecah Dua Belas was once part of the schoolcurriculum and performed regularly. However, curriculum changes have led to its decline in formal education. This research aims to examine preservation efforts for this dance in Pekanbaru, particulary through local art studios. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-dept interviews and analysis of documentation related to Zapin. The finding indicate that: (1) Zapin is preserved through non formal education via traditional art studios, public performance, and cultural festivals; and (2) preservation also occurs through informal and formal education settings. These efforts demonstrate taht consistent and sustainable strategies especially in non formal educational contexts can effectively preserve Zapin Pecah dua Belas. Furthermore, integrating it into formal education as local conten offers potential for broader cultural transmission. This study highlights the importance of collaborative efforts innmaintaining traditional arts as part of regional identity. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
