Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model assisted by Ceria Huma Betang Media in narrative writing instruction at special junior high schools (SMPLB) and to analyze its contribution to improving the narrative writing skills of students with hearing impairment. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach supported by qualitative data, using a one-group pre-test post-test design. The participants consisted of 40 students with hearing impairment from three special schools in Palangka Raya City. Data were collected using a narrative writing assessment rubric covering content, narrative structure, idea organization, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy, as well as classroom observations. The quantitative data were analyzed using a paired-sample t-test, normalized gain (N-gain), and effect size analysis. The results indicate a statistically significant improvement in students' narrative writing skills after the implementation of CTL assisted by Ceria Huma Betang Media (p < 0.05), with a very large effect size (Cohen's d = 2.78). Students' mean writing scores increased substantially from the pre-test to the post-test, accompanied by higher levels of engagement, confidence, and active participation during the learning process. The average N-gain score was 0.62, which falls into the moderate improvement category. These findings demonstrate that integrating CTL with culturally contextual visual media effectively facilitates meaningful narrative writing instruction for students with hearing impairment. This study provide empirical evidence to the field of special education by extending the application of CTL to inclusive language learning contexts and highlighting the pedagogical value of cultural based instructional media.
