This chapter takes an ideological approach to the English curriculum in Indonesia through critical literacy perspectives. It discusses the implementation of the current English curriculum in relation to the national development orientation, especially on the discourse of character building. We argue that while the state has prioritized communication skills and cognitive objectives in the English curriculum, it has given insufficient attention to the role of English in equipping students with necessary character-building competencies. Given the vital roles of critical literacy embedded through the English curriculum, we highlight the importance of integrating critical literacy into the English curriculum to provide a more holistic approach to students’ literacy development and character building. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Subhan Zein and Fuad Abdul Hamied; individual chapters, the contributors.
