Abstract

Improper solid waste management has serious impacts on the environment and public health. Higher education institutions play a crucial role in raising student awareness of this issue. This study aims to map the progression of studies concerning student awareness of solid waste management (SWM) within higher education institutions through a bibliometric analysis of publications in the Scopus database during the period 2015-2025. A total of 828 articles discussing SWM awareness and practices among students were identified. VOSviewer was used to visualize current research trends and maps. The results show a significant increase in the number of publications over the past decade. China, the United States, and India are the main contributors. The journals Sustainability, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Waste Management were noted as the dominant sources of publications in this field. Six main topic clusters were identified, covering technical aspects, sustainability, student behavior, psychosocial issues, global issues, and environmental education. These findings indicate that student awareness of waste management should be approached in an interdisciplinary and systematic manner. The findings of this research contribute meaningfully to scholarly discourse and suggest strategic pathways forward for the development of sustainable campus policies in the future. © 2025 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
