Abstract

United Nations has declared the 2030 Agenda involving 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Realization of sustainable development often encounters various challenges. However, over the last few years, the circular economy has shown a promising way to solve the problems and lead to the success of sustainable development completion. The circular economy concept instructs the minimalization of waste and pollution through waste recycling into valuable products. Hence, it can conserve the natural system and speed up the 2030 Agenda implementation. University as an institution holding two main duties, i.e. developing human resources through education and creating innovation by means of research and community service, has an important role to support circular economy transition and sustainable development achievement. Best practice in Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Indonesia, shows that strategic policy can nurture circular economy transition towards sustainability, specifically through the research and community service activities managed by the Research and Community Service Institute and the conservation program held by the Technical Implementation Unit of Conservation Development. Several works related to the utilization of waste into value-added products such as organic fertilizer, biodiesel, hand soap, stove fuel, leave skeleton, crafts, eco-print products, and batik dyes.
