Abstract

This study aims to investigate the thermal and cooling properties of the traditional Malaysian Labu Sayong, a gourd-shaped water container made of porous clay. By varying initial water temperature between 18 ºC and 70 ºC, the temperature changes of water stored in a Labu Sayong under various environmental conditions were compared. Temperature and volume changes were measured over time using a digital thermometer and measurement beaker. Each condition was repeated three times to ensure precision and reliability. Results showed that at 32 °C ambient temperature, the water temperature in Labu Sayong could be reduced by 6.5 °C, while the water temperature in the normal bottle was only reduced by only 1.1 °C after 210 min. The cooling effect was more pronounced under higher ambient temperatures and with higher initial water temperatures. Newton's Cooling Law accurately predicted temperature dynamics within the Labu Sayong, demonstrating the vessel's sensitivity to initial and ambient conditions. A predictive model was also formulated in order to predict the water temperature at a given duration. The findings suggest that traditional pottery methods, such as those used in Labu Sayong production, offer efficient and sustainable cooling solutions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2026.
