Statistical Literacy Analysis in Primary School Teachers Candidates in Terms of Prior Ability on Mathematics

Abstract

This study analyzes the statistical literacy abilities of prospective elementary school teachers in terms of their prior knowledge of mathematics and their secondary education background. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research was conducted at one of the private universities in Surakarta City. The subjects used by students in the odd semester of the 2022–2023 academic year in the Educational Statistics course, with purposive sampling technique based on the student's last education. Data collection techniques include interviews, documents, and statistical literacy questions. The validity of data is determined using triangulation techniques and sources. Data analysis using cycles models: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) concluding. The results of the study concluded that: (1) the last education student in high school with a science concentration entered at the mathematical knowledge level, (2) the last education student in high school with a social sciences concentration entered at the statistical knowledge level, and (3) the last education student in vocational high school and others entered at the level of statistical knowledge and literacy skills. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
