Physics students in higher education need simple experimental activities that they can do independently at home during pandemic era. This study offers a simple experiment in the optics course in the form of an activity to investigate the effect of repeated frying on the refractive index of cooking oil. A red diode laser (645 nm) was used as the light source. The sample used were cooking oil that has not been used and that has been used for frying once to three times. Each sample was placed in a different transparent box. Experiments were carried out by varying the incidence angle from 100 to 600 and measuring the refraction angle. Experiments were recorded with a smartphone camera continuously. Refractive angles were measured using tracker software. By using Snell's law, the results were that the refractive index of cooking oil decreases after repeated frying. This research can be an offer to explain the application of refractive index in optics courses for physics students. In addition, it is also preliminary research in the study of the effect of repeated frying on the quality of cooking oil. © 2023 Author(s).
