Comparison of the distribution of closed areas by main roads as a comparison of traffic congestion levels in major cities of Indonesia

Abstract

The road network in the cities area is known to affect traffic congestion levels. Road's intersection in the cities creating closed areas with various sizes. In this study, we compared the distribution of areas closed by main roads in several major cities of Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya. The areas were measured via Google Maps using ImageJ software. The measurement data indicated that closed areas were lognormally distributed. We obtained the average closed areas were (1.56±0.05), (1.10±0.02), (0.58±0.05), and (0.74±0.07) km2 in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya, respectively, indicating the level of congestion in Jakarta > Bandung > Surabaya > Semarang. This finding was in accordance with the data on traffic congestion levels in Indonesia. In addition, the level of traffic congestion could also be visualized by the fitting of the lognormal distribution curve, which it showed an aligned result. This research is hopefully beneficial as an alternative simple preliminary study to compare the level of traffic congestion in certain areas. © 2023 Author(s).
