Fabrication and characterization of thermal insulating material based on the synergy of sawdust and disposable diaper pads fibers

Abstract

Porous materials can be used as the main material for thermal insulators due to their low thermal conductivity. In this study, waste from sawdust and absorbent pads of used disposable diapers to be characterized as thermal insulating material. CCD Microscope Scopeman MS-804 was used to analytical imaging of the fibers. Combination fiber pads from sawdust and used disposable diapers, and foam (+control) were evaluated for their conductivity values according to ASTM E1225-87 Standard Test Method for Thermal Conductivity of Solid. The morphology of the mixture from disposable diaper fiber and sawdust showed a rougher on the surface of the fibers with different compositions. Based on regression analysis, there is a positive and significant relation between the composition of sawdust in the mixture and the value of the thermal conductivity. The coefficient of determination (0,9736) means that the average thermal conductivity of the mixture is 97.36% determined by the composition of sawdust in the mixture, through the regression equation y=-0.9354x+0.1355, the remaining 2.64% is determined by other factors. The lowest thermal conductivity is 0.062644 W/m°C, this value was included in range of conductivity for thermal insulators. The results of the study revealed that the fabricated material has a better synergistic effect, safer and more effective as a thermal insulator material © 2023 Author(s).
