Abstract

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that integrates virtual images into natural environments. Users can interact with these images, including in the context of physics education. The study aims to unveil and analyze the use of AR in physics education through a bibliometric and mapping approach. The analysis results show that about half of the 1,032 related articles were published between 2012-2023. There are 1023 documents from 328 sources, and the growth rate of articles shows a significant increase. The results showed that the most article authors were Mantri and Computer and Education related journals, which published the most articles about AR. China has the most article contributions, followed by Spain, USA, Korea, and Malaysia. The keyword "augmented reality"is the most frequently used main keyword. Keywords that are still a research opportunity or whose frequency is still minor are AR learning environment and AR creative and critical thinking. This study provides an overview of trends in the use of AR in physics education and valuable information for researchers, educators, and policymakers to formulate more creative and efficient learning strategies. © 2026 Author(s).
