Investigation of soil improvement on embankment road: Case study of soft soil in the Tegal area

Abstract

Soil condition in Tegal area shows that there is 13 m-soft soil from the result of field and laboratory investigation. The research of soil improvement is conducted due to load of embankment road by analyzing combination of the Plaxis program which uses the finite element principle and the manual method of soil improvement consolidation. The analysis uses comparison of two alternatives in soil improvement: PVD (spacing 1 m, 1.2 m) and minipile (square 0.2 m and 0.25 m). The variation of embankment height is 2 m, 4m, 6m. The analysis results the settlement and safety factor of the embankment road. The 2 m height embankment can use PVD (spacing 1 m, 1.2 m) and minipile (0.2 m, 0,25 m because the rate of settlement, degree of consolidation and safety factor still in the range of settlement limits (2 cm/year), min 90% and SF min 1.4. The 4 m and 6 m height embankment can only use minipile (0.2 m and 0.25 m) so that the rate of settlement, degree of consolidation and safety factor is still in the range of settlement limits (2 cm/year), min 90% and SF min 1.4. The list in order of the smallest settlement are minipile 0.25 m, minipile 0.2 m, PVD spacing 1 m, and PVD spacing 1.2 m. The list in order of the largest safety factor are PVD spacing 1 m, PVD spacing 1.2 m, minipile 0.25 m, and minipile 0.2 m. The result of settlement and safety factor in soil improvement variation can be used as a recommendation for carrying out soil improvement on road embankments in the Tegal area. © 2023 Author(s).
