Abstract

Information on building density, also known as the building cover ratio (BCR) or percentage building density (PBD), is essential for resolving urban environmental problems. This information can be obtained through remote sensing such as Landsat satellite imagery. In Indonesia, this study is still limited to Java Island, where most of the buildings have clay tile roofs. Therefore, this study aims to examine several built-in land indices from Landsat 8 satellite imagery in estimating the density of buildings in areas where most of the buildings have metal roofs, namely Pontianak City. The built-up land indexes used are NDII (Normalized Difference Impervious Index), NDBI (Normalized Difference Building Index) and BCI (Biophysical Composition Index). The results of linear regression analysis show that NDBI has a higher correlation and coefficient of determination than NDII and BCI. The building density model made from NDBI has the smallest RMSE. It is considered better in estimating the density of buildings in the research location than NDII and BCI. © 2023 Author(s).
