In this study, microwave heating and Pd/C catalyst were used for the isomerization reaction of eugenol to isoeugenol. The Pd/C catalysts were characterized using BET, XRD, and SEM-EDX. The catalyst characterization using BET showed that the catalyst had a surface area of 1.485 m2/g and a pore volume of 20.72 mm. The XRD analysis showed the presence of carbon compounds at the peak of 29.72o and 43.79o, while the peak of palladium can be found at 39.34o and 47.16o. The SEM analysis showed that the Pd/C structure in the cubes collection agglomerated each other with the hexagonal activated carbon particles. Characterization using EDX showed that 13.89% of palladium was attached to the carbon. The isomerization of eugenol to isoeugenol used three variations there are reaction time, microwave power, and catalyst mass. Analysis using GC-MS showed that the best reaction conditions were obtained at 120 minutes, 800 W power, and 60 mg catalyst with conversion results of 18.49%, selectivity of 42.67%, and yield of 7.89%. The results of characterization using FTIR showed isomerization results in the form of isoeugenol as evidenced by special characteristics at the wave number 962 cm-1 which is the =C-H trans group, and at the wave number 786 cm-1 which is the =C-H cis group. © 2023 Author(s).
