Abstract

Have you ever been on a moving train? If so, you may observe that various stationary objects outside the train appear to travel backward at different velocities depending on their distance to the train. Theoretically, according to kinematics, all stationary objects outside the train have the same relative velocities to the observer inside the train. This paper provides a simple experiment using a smartphone to explain this phenomenon and formulate the theoretical justification. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
