Black rice 'Sirampog' is one of the potential plant genetic resources in Indonesia. Yet, it has not been registered as a superior variety because it has never been scientifically characterized. This research is aimed to characterize the agronomy, morphology, and ethnopharmacology of 'Sirampog'; and analyze its potency as a superior variety. The survey research was conducted in Sirampog Subdistrict, Brebes Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia in 2018. The traits observed include morphological and agronomical traits, based on the guidelines for Rice Characterization and Evaluation System published by the Indonesian Germplasm National Commission. The ethnopharmacology data was observed through questionnaires and interviews with the local community. Data were analyzed by descriptive narrative. The results showed that the traits of the rice 'Sirampog' were specific. The height reached was 175 cm. The rice was shiny black, fragrant, with weight of 100 grains ranged between 3.4-3.6 g and the yield was between 4-5 tons/ha. Local community used the black rice 'Sirampog' as food and beverage. They believed that black rice 'Sirampog'could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, digestive disorders; and enhance immunity. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the black rice 'Sirampog' has high potency to be set as a superior variety in Indonesia. © 2019 Author(s).
