The objective of this research was to identify the effect of authentic learning on the generic skills and on students’ character. The indicators of generic skills were communication, learning and performance improvement, management, and problem solving. The characters were honesty, fairness, leadership, tolerance, and love of peace and unity. The subjects of this research were 100 economics students who were taking the learning evaluation course. They were ready to conduct the teaching practice. The results of the study showed that there was an improvement of the generic skills on the economics pre-service teachers after learning the authentic learning. The generic skills could be improved in the teaching-learning process by linking the real life into the real problems. In addition, the pre-service teachers also had good characters after applying the authentic learning. They were more confident, creative, hard working, responsible, honest, and polite, work organization, and tolerant. The authentic learning could be an appropriate learning model to support an effective learning. This study offered insights on the interaction effects of authentic learning on generic skills and characters. It might help to develop their ability on the future. The generic skills and characters of students would be very helpful when they were going to enter the professional world. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers. All rights reserved.
