Abstract

This qualitative-phenomenological study examines Syarofal Anam, a traditional art form from South Sumatra, as a character education ecosystem. Conducted at the Insanul Kamil Syarofal Anam Student Association (PPSA Insanul Kamil) in Palembang, the research engaged both student participants and expert practitioners. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to investigate how its two core components―sholawat recitation and terbangan ensemble performance―function as pedagogical mechanisms. The findings reveal that sholawat recitation develops moral cognition and narrative identity, while the synchronized practice of terbangan fosters shared intentionality and prosocial skills. Together, these elements create a holistic practice that internalizes values and forms a moral habitus within a community of practice. The study concludes that Syarofal Anam provides a robust framework for character education with significant potential for integration into modern educational curricula to simultaneously advance cultural sustainability and moral development. © 2026 Korean Music Education Society.
