Abstract

The objectives of learning require excellent modes so that the learners can participate completely, eagerly, enthusiastically, and highly motivated in the learning process. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the learning activities brought negative effects on the students, such as boredom, low motivation, and learning loss.Students should have received encouragement to highly engage in the learning, to master the learning concept, and to master the predetermined concept. The mathematics students of Elementary School Teacher Education of UniversitasNegeri Semarang received online learning for two years. This condition decreased the effectiveness of the learning. The obtained data found that the student's participation in the learning or student engagement and the student's mathematics exploration skills needed to be improved. This research revealed the improvement of student engagement and student mathematical exploration during Geometric Learning and Measurement at the Study Program of Elementary School Teacher Education, UniversitasNegeri Semarang with mathematical virtual manipulative. The applied method was a quasi-experimental method with a control group pretest-posttest. The researchers determined the control group and the experimental group. The control group received regular learning while the experimental group received mathematical visual manipulative learning. The results showed an improvement in student mathematical exploration skills and student engagement in the experimental group, taught by mathematical virtual manipulative. The improvement of the experimental group was better than the control group - without the implementation of mathematical virtual manipulation. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
