The development of socioscientific issues (SSI) content in educational comics is a new niche in science education. Based on this, we conducted a scoping literature review to identify gaps and trends in this field. This study focuses on four main criteria/indicators that we analyse in studies in this field: SSI content in comics, comics form, comics roles and targets. We also analysed the type of study and data in the studies in this scoping literature review. The results of this scoping show that of the four main criteria, none dominates, except for SSI content, which is dominated by content on environmental issues. Nothing dominates the type of study, but questionnaires and comic product analysis dominate the data type. In the discussion section, we discuss and recommend several important things for future research in this field. We recommend four things: enriching SSI content, transitioning from print to digital comics, orienting student-centred learning, expanding the comic’s target, designing SSI content based on different perspectives, and future studies regarding the type of studies and data. © 2025 The Author(s).
