ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has become a popular issue. However, there are many obstacles in joining AEC. One of them is English for communication. Unfortunately, business English letters as the media for communication in business are not taught at schools. In fact, in this free trade era high school leavers are enhanced for being businessmen that need communications for business. This study aims at knowing the common stages of business English letters via email, whether the writers and the addresees understand the letters, and the strategies used in the letters. The data of study were 26 emails. They were analyzed qualitatively by implementing genre analysis based on social function and systemic functional grammar analysis. There were some findings after the analysis done. First, the common stages of English email are sender's name and address ∧ date ∧ receiver's name ∧ greetings ∧ body of letter ∧ the closing and signature. Further, the email sender and the addressee can understand the emails even though 70% of emails has incorrect grammar. Finally, having 3 semantic categories, writing the time, and giving correct punctuation in a clause become the strategies of writers with weak English mastery for communication via email.
