Abstract

The rapid growth of the textile industry sector in Indonesia has had a significant negative impact on the environment, mainly due to the inappropriate disposal of synthetic dyes. In order to overcome the drawbacks of a single technology and improve the efficiency of the dye removal process in wastewater, it is suggested to combine the adsorption and photocatalytic processes. In this study, a unique biochar-ZnO adsorbent was made from petung bamboo leaves with a high lignin as well as cellulose content. It was then tested for methylene blue (MB) adsorption-photodegradation. The composite was made using a two-step pyrolysis method in an electric furnace with limited air that was set at temperature of 400°C for an hour. The samples were characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. When ZnO was added to biochar, MB elimination under UV light was improved to 99.8% at an initial concentration of 200 mg.dm-3, pH of 3, and 3 hours of processing time. Adsorption improves the interaction between MB molecules and photocatalysts thereby increasing the efficiency of the photocatalytic process. Furthermore, the separation and transfer of photoexcited charge carriers may be accelerated by adsorbents with strong electron transfer properties, such as biochar. The decolorization of MB corresponds to a pseudo-second order kinetic model. In summary, biochar-ZnO composite is a very practical solution for dye removal from wastewater. © 2024 Author(s).
