This letter critically reflects on a recent study examining neonatal nurses' perceptions of parental post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While acknowledging the study's contribution in highlighting visible parental distress within neonatal care, we argue that observational perceptions should not be equated with PTSD prevalence. Emotional responses in neonatal contexts may reflect a broad spectrum of distress that does not necessarily meet diagnostic criteria. We further emphasize the need for direct assessment of parental experiences to complement clinical observations. A more cautious and conceptually precise interpretation is therefore essential to avoid conflating perceived distress with clinically established trauma-related disorders. © 2026 Neonatal Nurses Association.
